Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things-Phil. 4:8
So far, in considering things to think about, we have focused on two positive alternatives which could be categorized as “right thinking.” We can (and should) think about things that are true and things that are honest (honorable/respectable). Paul’s list offers more instruction.
Think about things that are just. Have you ever met someone who seemed to be hung up over the fact that ‘life was unfair’? Do you ever get hung up over that fact?
Of course, it’s true. There is a mountain of injustice in our world. Babies are aborted. Women are abused and exploited. Crooked businessmen prosper. Hunger and poverty abound. Murders go unsolved. In addition, to these familiar and general injustices, we may experience some extremely personal, extremely painful injustices.
As victims, we may be captivated by all that has been done wrong to us. Sadness, despair, resentment, anger, bitterness, and a desire for revenge may occupy our minds.
However, the Word of God offers us an alternative. Think about things that are just. This is easier said than done (especially when you are hurting)! There is a certain amount of allegiance (loyalty) that we feel concerning the injustice that we experienced. We are afraid that moving on and occupying our minds elsewhere somehow excuses or justifies the wrong that was done to us.
Certainly, that is NOT the case. However, Paul’s instruction here presents believers with an option, an opportunity to get their minds off the fact that ‘life is unfair.’
Think about it. Yes, there is a whole lot of bad around us in this world. Is it all bad? Yes, you have had some bad things happen to you personally. Has it all been bad?
A clear and honest perspective will reveal that not everything is bad, but that there have been some things that have gone right (and there are some things that are going right at this moment in your life)!
Even if there are bad things, unfair things, you are experiencing right now, you know (as a believer) that all things work together for good to them that love God (Rom. 8:28).
The Judge of all the earth will do right (Gen. 18:25)! Think about just things!
