Some Things to Think About Part V

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things-Phil. 4:8.

How do you feel about bad news? If you are like me, you hate bad news. Unfortunately, the world that we live in is full of bad news. War, sickness, famine, disasters, tragedy, abuse, etc. saturate our world. It can get downright depressing.

On a smaller scale, our personal world (family, job, church, etc.) is also filled with bad news. Frequently, we find ourselves getting or giving bad news. Sometimes, it seems like that is all there is and we become so weary with it.
Like the psalmist David, we exclaim Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest (Ps. 55:6b). We would just like to get away!

Of course, we can’t do that. We have to stay right here and experience all of this bad news.

Yet, the Bible (as it often does), offers us a positive alternative. The instruction is to think upon those things that are of good report.

At this point it is important to understand that the instruction that Paul is giving can only be accomplished by discipline (hard work). Certainly, God will graciously help us, but ultimately it is up to us if we are going to think on things that are of good report. We must make a choice.

Understand that this choice does not negate the reality of bad news, it merely shifts your focus. Regardless of how you may feel or how it may seem, your life is not full of bad news!

If you are a Christian, there is all kinds of good news for you. There is a Primary Source that offers a good report for you to think upon. Pick up your Bible. Read it. Study it. Memorize it.

It is in the pages of God’s Word, that you will find the perspective that you need in order to endure the bad news you are experiencing. It’s time to elevate our focus to God’s Good Report.
As the bad news keeps coming, remember. . . .THERE’S SOMETHING IN GOD’S WORD FOR ME!
