All this hot weather reminds me of a lesson that I learned a couple of years ago. We had one of those soft-sided swimming pools for the kids. I put it out in the back yard in a somewhat level spot and started filling it up. The challenge with those pools is in getting the wrinkles out of bottom (the liner). I saw the wrinkles but I plunged on ahead thinking that the more water I put in, the better it would get. Can you guess where this is going? I never did get the wrinkles out of that pool!
Later, I found out that the instructions clearly listed that getting the wrinkles out was one of the necessary steps before filling the pool with water. Of course, like any man, I never bothered to read the instructions before I filled the pool up (now’s the time for your amen ladies).
After dealing with that, I began to think about it a bit. Why didn’t I read the instructions?
First, I didn’t think about reading them. I was more focused on doing than thinking.
Second, I thought I knew how to do it already. How hard could it be? After all, with all of my expertise in everything, I was confident that I could handle it.
Third, I didn’t want to take the time. I was in a hurry to do more pleasurable things, so I wanted to get it done so I could move on. Doing something else (anything else) was on my mind.
The result? I had to live with a constant reminder that I didn’t read the instructions.
I hope you understand that this really isn’t aimless rambling about a swimming pool. That summer, I learned a real and important lesson about reading the instructions.
So, how about it? Have you been reading the instructions? Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path-Ps. 119:105. God’s Word is loaded with instructions for building a successful life and achieving eternal bliss.
Do you study those instructions carefully? Maybe you just haven’t thought about it. Perhaps you think you have all the answers already. Could it be that you just don’t want to take the time (something, anything else is more attractive)?
Remember something very important-YOU WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE CONSTANT REMINDER THAT YOU DIDN’T READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.
Why don’t you brush the dust off the Book and see what God’s got to say to you?
Reading the Instructions,
