You probably realize that today is about more than candy, eggs, get-togethers, and the Easter Bunny. It is equally necessary to recognize that it is more than the mere observance of a religious custom. There are many details and points of emphasis to notice and ponder when it comes to the significance of this day.
Time or space will not allow me to emphasize all that could be mentioned here. Understand that the key, the core issue, the number one essential is belief. You need to believe in the resurrection. Are you convinced that Jesus rose from the dead?
There are several reasons to believe in the resurrection:
1. The Word of God emphasizes it as an established reality-The resurrection is firmly declared in scripture. I Cor. 15:3-4 says Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures. . .he was buried. . .and. . .he rose again the third day according to the scriptures. There are many other verses in the Bible that proclaim, in “matter-of-fact” language, that Christ did indeed rise from the grave.
2. There were eyewitnesses-I Cor. 15 provides a list of these eyewitnesses: Cephas (Peter), the twelve, five hundred brethren at once, James, and Paul himself (see vss. 5-7). Acts 1:3 says he [Christ] shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs. This means that He presented Himself to be alive in definite ways and at definite times. For those who encountered Him, there was no doubt, not even a little uncertainty. Jesus was alive!
3. Christianity has survived intense opposition for centuries-Immediately following the resurrection, there was an immediate, aggressive, and evil agenda to stamp out any following of the resurrected Christ (see Mt.28:11-15 & the book of Acts). From the 1st century until now, many plans have been devised to stop Christianity. All have failed. It has not only survived, but thrived. Would a fake religion have been able to endure?
4. The disciples died martyrs’ deaths-History reveals that almost all of the disciples died for the sake of Jesus Christ. Incidentally, these were the same guys who all forsook him, and fled (Mk. 14:50) as He was being arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane. What changed for them? What caused them to suddenly wax bold enough to die horrific deaths for the same Person they had previously abandoned? The answer is that they were operating under the belief, the conviction that Jesus was alive! In addition, if they were lying about Him being alive, if they had really just hidden the body away somewhere, would they have been willing to embrace that perversion to the point of death?
I have tried to give you both Biblical and practical reasons for believing in the resurrection. However, there is one ultimate reason, one primary motivation for believing in the resurrection-INWARD EVIDENCE. There is NOTHING like a personal experience with this resurrected Lord. In essence, the reason you should believe in the resurrection is because (as the old song goes) you know He lives within your heart! Does He?
